Jimmy
Role
Co-pilot of the Tulpar spaceship, responsible for Navigation. Takes on the role of captain during emergencies, as seen throughout the game when Curly is incapacitated.
Appearance
Jimmy is an adult male with distinctive features. He has straight brown hair styled in a mid-part, brown eyes that often convey disinterest or disdain, and a patchy stubble. His attire consists of Pony Express overalls worn over a white long-sleeved t-shirt, complemented by black sneakers.
Personality
Jimmy's character is defined by jealousy, spite, and manipulation. He sees himself as undervalued and harbors resentment towards those in higher positions, particularly Curly. Jimmy is selfish, prioritizing his own needs above others. He's skilled at manipulating people, often portraying himself as hardworking and selfless to achieve his goals. His desire for advancement and feelings of inadequacy drive many of his actions throughout the story.
History
Little is known about Jimmy's past, except that he had a 'struggle of a life' on Earth, as described by Curly. He began working under Captain Curly as a co-pilot, a position that soon bred resentment due to his desire for higher status.
Jimmy's actions drive much of the plot in 'Mouthwashing'. Under pressure from potential job loss and personal issues, he attempts a murder-suicide by crashing the ship into an asteroid. When this fails, he assumes command, blaming Curly for the accident. As the situation deteriorates, Jimmy's mental state declines, leading to increasingly erratic and violent behavior. His actions result in the deaths of most crew members, culminating in a disturbing scene of forced cannibalism involving Curly. In a final act of deluded heroism, Jimmy places Curly in a cryogenic pod before committing suicide.
Relationships
Curly
Jimmy's relationship with Curly is complex, mixing deep hatred with admiration. He resents Curly's success while simultaneously viewing him as a highly capable individual. After the crash, Jimmy's treatment of Curly becomes sadistic and paternalistic, reflecting his twisted perception of their relationship.
Anya
Jimmy shows little respect for Anya, disregarding her professional qualifications and using her as an outlet for his frustrations. It's implied that he sexually assaulted her, resulting in a pregnancy. Anya fears Jimmy and takes measures to protect herself from him.
Daisuke
Jimmy manipulates Daisuke, viewing him as a naive rich kid. He exploits Daisuke's desire for approval, often putting him in dangerous situations. Despite this, Jimmy shows some remorse for Daisuke's fate.
Swansea
Swansea sees through Jimmy's facade and refuses to accept his leadership. Their relationship is antagonistic, with Swansea calling out Jimmy's delusions. Jimmy views Swansea as a useless drunkard but feels guilty about his death.
Trivia
The name 'Jimmy' means 'he who supplants', which foreshadows his role in forcefully taking the captain's position from Curly.
A humorous doodle of Jimmy can be found on the wall in the med-room, featuring an unflattering close-up drawn on a yellow sticker.
